MAKINTI NAPANANGKA

Language Group: Pintupi
Region: Walungurru (Kintore) – Northern Territory
Date of Birth: c1930 (deceased 9 January 2011)

Content: Makinti began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1996 having already painted with acrylic on canvas during the Kintore and Haast Bluff Project in 1993/1994.

Makinti primarily paints complex patterns of pale lines representing the designs associated with the travels of Kungka Kutjarra (two women).  The lines that so often feature in her paintings depict the swirling hair string skirts/belts worn by aboriginal women and men during ceremonies associated with certain sites.

In 2005 Makinti was named as one of ‘Australia’s Fifty Most Collectable Artists’ by Australian Art Collector.

Makinti has participated in numerous group exhibitions and has had three solo shows: at Utopia Art in Sydney in 2000 and 2001 and at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi, Melbourne in 2002. In 2003 she was finalist in the esteemed Clemenger Art Award held at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
